Outdoor Adventures Await this Easter. Spring Sunshine, Fresh Air, New Energy

Outdoor Adventures Await this Easter. Spring Sunshine, Fresh Air, New Energy

The Joys of Spring

It's the moment when the world seems to wake up after the dark winter. Easter feels like the first sunny morning of the year. The days stretch out a little longer, nodding daffodils and the lush green of new leaves line our routes, and fields that looked bare not long ago are suddenly filled with little lambs.

For many families it also marks the start of the spring school holidays. Children start to find more to do outdoors, parks feel lively again, and lighter shoes appear by the back door. It is a season that invites movement – which, for us at Happy Little Soles, makes it the perfect time to talk about feet, fresh air, and the simple pleasure of getting outdoors.

So before the chocolate eggs are discovered and the wellies are pulled on, let’s take a little look at Easter itself. Where it comes from, how it is celebrated around the world, and why it continues to be such a bright, uplifting point in the year.

The Origins of Easter

Easter is the most important festival in the Christian calendar, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the end of Holy Week. For Christians around the world, it is a deeply significant religious event, observed through services, reflection, and community celebration.

But like many long-standing traditions, Easter has gathered layers over time. The festival falls close to the spring equinox, a point in the year that cultures have marked for thousands of years as a time of renewal and new life. Eggs, rabbits, and budding flowers all became natural symbols of the season’s return, welcoming light and renewal after winter

That is why Easter today feels like a blend of good things. Religious tradition, seasonal celebration, and family ritual all wrapped together in one bright, sunny holiday.

And of course, spring itself does most of the work. After months of grey skies and little light, the world wakes up and looks hopeful again.

Easter Traditions Around the World

One of the most charming things about Easter is how differently it is celebrated across the globe.

Malta is known for its heartfelt Easter traditions, where communities join in processions carrying statues of Jesus and Mary, often accompanied by music and celebration. Families also enjoy figolli - almond pastries traditionally shaped as fish, rabbits, or crosses.

In Poland, families take baskets of food to church on Holy Saturday to be blessed – a custom known as Święconka that dates back centuries.

In Germany and parts of central Europe, branches and trees are decorated with brightly coloured in a tradition known as Osterbrunnen. The eggs represent new life and the arrival of spring.

And closer to home, many long‑standing traditions have shaped how Easter is marked across the British Isles. Villages often had their own customs: special loaves baked only at this time of year, ploughing paused in honour of the season, or the walk to church done barefoot as a simple act of devotion.

Others embraced the idea of renewal by wearing something new for Easter Sunday - a custom that eventually gave rise to the fancy Easter bonnet, a colourful, flower adorned hat or headpiece worn to symbolise hope, good fortune, and the start of spring.

Alongside these historic customs are the things most families recognise today. Decorating eggs, Easter egg hunts in the garden, hot cross buns toasted for breakfast, and the familiar appearance of the Easter Bunny with a basket of chocolate.

Around the world, Easter takes many forms, shaped by local customs, food, and community rituals. From Spain’s dramatic Holy Week processions to Australia’s cheerful egg hunts, each country brings its own character to the season. Together, these traditions create a vibrant picture of faith, culture, and springtime renewal shared across the globe.

Easter: Time to Head Outside

In the UK, Easter is closely tied to the landscape. It arrives just as the countryside begins to wake up properly.

Fields fill with lambs. Daffodils and blossoms brighten the verges. The first warm days seem to take us delightfully by surprise.

It is the moment we start spending more time outside again. Parks, woodland walks, and sunny adventures suddenly feel possible after the long winter stretch.

We all need to shake off the winter with a good hike, climb, scramble or explore. And if there was ever a season that suited barefoot shoes, this is it. Spring is all about movement and freedom – exactly what good barefoot footwear is designed to support.

Famous People Born at Easter

Because Easter moves each year – it is calculated as the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox – birthdays that fall during Easter weekend vary from year to year.

But a surprising number of well-known figures have Easter birthdays across different years. Actors Emma Watson and Paul Rudd, musicians Mariah Carey and Muddy Waters, and tennis star Maria Sharapova, have all celebrated their birthdays with chocolate eggs and spring flowers.

It feels fitting, really. Easter has always been associated with new beginnings.

But Why Does Easter Move Around Each Year?

Easter moves each year because its date is set using a traditional Church calculation rather than modern astronomy. In this system, Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following 21 March, which is taken as the fixed date of the spring equinox.

The full moon used is an ecclesiastical one - a Church‑defined date - which is why it doesn’t always match the astronomical calendar.

Using this method, Easter in 2025 lands on 20 April. The earliest it can ever fall is 22 March, something that last happened in 1818.

The method behind all this is called computus, a centuries‑old way of calculating the date of Easter. Early Christians linked the celebration to the period of the Jewish Passover, which follows the lunar calendar, but different communities used different lunar calculations and disagreed on the exact day to mark the Resurrection. Computus was developed to bring consistency, and it’s still the system we follow today.

Things to Do During the Easter Holidays

The Easter school break is a perfect excuse to slow things down a little and enjoy the start of spring. It does not have to be complicated or expensive.

A few simple traditions tend to become the ones children remember most.

Easter egg hunts

Whether it is a full garden treasure hunt or a few carefully hidden eggs behind flowerpots, it never loses its charm.

Spring walks

Look for lambs in nearby fields, spot early butterflies, and frog spawn in the pond. Guess the bird by its song, or simply notice how quickly the local trees and hedgerows are turning green.

A Trip to the Park

A climb and a play on the swings can turn a simple afternoon into a memorable adventure. Take a blanket to sit on, a snack and a book or two, and enjoy a fresh air storytime.

Finding Treasure

Children love finding things – feathers, interesting stones, blossoms, and seed pods. And naturally, finding out just how chilly the stream feels on bare feet! Spring is a time for treasure.

A Season Made for Barefoot Adventures

Spring has a way of tempting all of us back into motion. As the days lengthen and the air softens, we naturally spend more time outdoors - walking further, exploring new paths, and feeling that familiar lift in energy that comes with the first real signs of the season.

Barefoot footwear is a gift to this return to movement. With soles that allow the feet to flex, spread, and respond to the ground, they offer comfort and connection whether you’re heading out for a long dog walk, strolling through the woods, tackling a weekend hike, or simply enjoying a slow wander in the sunshine.

And as we start to shed the heavy boots of winter, it’s the perfect moment to look at lighter, brighter footwear that echoes the shift in season. Easy, flexible trainers, soft everyday shoes, and breathable spring sandals let your feet move freely and, if the weather cooperates, may well find themselves kicked off by the door as bare feet take over entirely.

Happy Easter

from Happy Little Soles

Easter is many things at once. A religious celebration, a seasonal turning point, and a family holiday full of simple rituals.

But most of all it’s a reminder to enjoy time outdoors. To notice the daffodils, the new buds and shoots, the longer evenings, and the sudden warmth of the sun.

And if you happen to spot us out and about doing the same thing, enjoying a spring walk in our favourite barefoot shoes, you will know exactly why we love this time of year so much.

Our office and warehouse will close for Good Friday and reopen again on Tuesday after the Easter Weekend. All orders received after midday on Thursday 2nd April will be processed when we get back on Tuesday 7th April
