Naturally, it brings questions. What should they be wearing? Do they even need shoes yet? And if they do, how do you choose something that supports their development properly?
Barefoot is Best
Before anything else, it's important to emphasise that the best thing for developing feet is barefoot time.
Being barefoot allows your little one's feet to move freely, to grip, balance and build strength in a completely natural way. It gives them direct feedback from the ground beneath them, which is essential in those early stages of learning to walk.
What a first walker should actually do
At this stage, a shoe should support development without interfering with it.
That means:
- Flexible soles that bend easily with the foot
- Lightweight construction that doesn’t weigh them down
- A natural shape, allowing toes to spread and move
- Secure fastening, keeping the foot in place without restriction
The aim is not to structure or correct, but to protect while allowing as much natural movement as possible. In many ways, the best first walkers are the ones that feel barely there.
Why Early Foot Development Matters
It is easy to assume that a baby’s foot is simply a smaller version of an adult foot, but in reality, it is something quite different. At birth and throughout those early months, a baby’s feet are incredibly soft and still developing. What we think of as “bones” are largely made up of cartilage, a flexible, cushioning material that has not yet fully hardened.
This softness is essential. It allows little feet to mould, adapt and grow naturally as a baby begins to move, balance and eventually take those first steps. Over time, this cartilage gradually ossifies, forming the structure and strength of adult bones, but this process takes years, not months.

- At 6 months old, the foot is made up of mostly cartilage and is highly susceptible to changes as a result of ill-fitting shoes.
- At 2 years old, the bone structure is developing, but there are still large gaps between the bones.
- By the age of 8, although the second part of the phalangeal and metatarsal bones can be seen, they will take a further 10 years to fuse together.
Because of this, early walkers need shoes that work with their feet, not against them. Heavy, rigid footwear with stiff soles can restrict natural movement and interfere with healthy development. Instead, the right first walker shoes should support gently, allowing feet to move freely, flex naturally and build strength step by step.
Put simply, in these early stages, a baby’s feet are still finding their shape. The role of a first shoe is not to control that process, but to protect it, supporting every step as those soft, developing feet begin their journey.
The early walking stage is when patterns begin to form. How a child balances, how they place their feet, and how confidently they move.
Poorly designed shoes can restrict that. Too stiff, too heavy, too narrow, and they begin to change the way a child walks.
That is why choosing well matters. Not for style or trend, but for function at a time when development is moving quickly.
Our approach
This is where our experience comes in.
Happy Little Soles was built on children’s footwear, and first walkers have always been at the heart of what we do. Over the years, we have worked with thousands of families at exactly this stage, answering the same questions, solving the same concerns, and learning what genuinely works in practice.
Each style is carefully researched before it is chosen, based on how well it supports natural development. We always prioritise barefoot shoes, that means flexible, foot-shaped designs, lighter, breathable constructions and materials that are kind to sensitive skin, and allow movement, not restrict it.
Alongside this, we have built a detailed advice hub designed to guide parents through each stage, from first steps through to more confident walking, and beyond. It's a great place to start if you are reaching the stage where you think your toddler might be ready for their first pair of shoes.
And when you need something more personal, our customer service team is here to help. Fit, sizing, choosing between styles, what to look for, what to avoid. It is all part of the service. Because at this stage, reassurance matters just as much as the product itself.

The Happy Little Soles First Walker Collection
Outdoor Shoes
For those first outdoor adventures, a well-made shoe really matters. Once toddlers get moving, they can be surprisingly tough on their footwear. Brands like Garvalin, Common Tread, Bundgaard, Camper, and Froddo make great first shoes.
Boots and Wellies
Wellingtons are a year round essential; there will be plenty of puddle jumping opportunities! Our wellies are soft, warm, and of course waterproof. Boots are also a great choice for wet weather protection, giving a secure fit and adding warmth on cooler days. Look for options from Baby Bogs, Tip Toey Joey, Camper Peu, Bundgaard, and Froddo.
Trainers and Sneakers
Lightweight and easy to wear, toddler trainers and sneakers are perfect for all day play. They offer flexibility, comfort, and a great look, too. There is plenty of choice in this category, from barefoot brands including Bobux SU Xplorer, Vivobarefoot, Old Soles and Garvalin
Sandals and Water shoes
Ideal for warmer days, sandals allow feet to breathe in a way closed shoes cannot, while water shoes are perfect for little ones to keep on whether they are in or out of the water. They are quick drying and soft enough next to skin to wear without socks.
Slippers and Soft Soles
Choosing the right pair
There is no single 'best' first shoe, only the right one for your child.
Fit is always the most important factor. There should be enough room for growth, without the foot moving around. The shoe should feel secure, but never tight. And above all, it should allow movement, not restrict it.
It is also worth thinking about where the shoes will be worn. Occasional use outdoors requires something slightly different to all day wear.
If you are unsure, that is entirely normal. This is one of the most common questions we are asked, and one where good guidance can make all the difference.
A milestone, properly supported
First walkers are a small part of a much bigger stage. They do not teach a child to walk, but they can support that journey when used at the right time, in the right way.
Used well, they offer protection without compromise. They allow children to step out into the world while still moving as naturally as they would barefoot.
And for parents, that brings something just as important: confidence that they have made the right choice at the right moment.
