Froddo Barefoot Shoes: Inside the Range

Froddo comes from a Croatian manufacturer called Ivančica, which has been making shoes since 1946. What started as a small group of shoemakers has grown into a large-scale production company, but the core of it is still footwear made in-house.

The Froddo brand launched in 1999, focusing on children's leather shoes with an emphasis on fit and everyday use. At that stage, most children's footwear still followed quite a structured approach, even though little feet are still developing in shape, strength and movement. They change quickly and don't all follow the same pattern, so in 2019, Froddo introduced a separate barefoot line.

Rather than replacing their existing styles, Froddo Barefoot sits alongside them with a different approach to shape and construction. The soles are zero drop and flexible through the length of the shoe, and the toe box has lots of wriggle room for growing feet.

The strong emphasis on quality remains. Their shoes are all constructed using high-quality, responsibly sourced materials, with many styles featuring chrome-free leather and breathable uppers. Their durability means that they are often passed down or along to future wearers. 

Froddo Barefoot at Happy Little Soles

Froddo Barefoot brings a more foot-friendly design into the wider Froddo range. There's a wide variety of styles, all built with zero-drop soles that are shaped to allow natural movement while still holding up to everyday wear.

Key features you can expect from Froddo Barefoot include:

• Wide, foot-shaped toe boxes for natural toe splay
• Lightweight builds that don't add bulk

They are not the most minimal barefoot footwear, but they are not heavy either. There's a bit of substance to them, which comes through in how well they wear and how easily they are passed down.

Within the Froddo Barefoot range, there is a good spread of styles across the seasons. You'll find everyday shoes and trainers, sandals, canvas sneakers, slippers, and cosy boots. 

While the shapes and materials shift slightly between styles, the underlying build stays consistent. Each one keeps that barefoot construction, adapted to suit how and where it's worn.

Their school shoes are always a reliable choice throughout the year, holding up well to daily use and lots of movement between classroom and playground.

Sizing and Fit

The smaller sizes work really well for new walkers. Their First Step range and Stap sandals are really soft and lightweight, and they have a flat, foot-shaped sole to give enough freedom for feet that are finding their way, without adding too much of a layer between them and the ground.

Across the sizes, the same construction is followed, so they remain a reliable option as kids grow. We find many families choose Froddo Barefoot for the entirety of their children's feet growing years.

The bigger sizes are no less barefoot. It's lovely to see this consistency carried through with just as much care and attention paid to adults' foot health as to smaller ones.

Froddo vs Froddo Barefoot

It’s worth noting that not all Froddo shoes are barefoot. Froddo produces both traditional and barefoot styles, and they can look quite similar at first glance.

The Froddo Barefoot line is specifically designed with barefoot features such as flexible soles, wider toe boxes and minimal drop. Other Froddo styles may have more structure, cushioning or a narrower fit.
