Merrell has long been associated with outdoor performance, producing footwear designed for hiking, trail running, and everyday adventure. In recent years, part of that focus has shifted towards shoes that allow for a more natural way of moving.
If you are new to barefoot footwear, Merrell offers an accessible entry point, combining familiar sportswear durability with a pared-back construction.
At Happy Little Soles, we have a small, carefully put together selection of Merrell trainers, including the well-known Vapor Glove and the lighter, summer-ready Hydro Quest for active kids. Both reflect a wider shift in how people think about footwear and foot health.
What are Barefoot Shoes?
Barefoot footwear is built around a few key principles. A wide toe box allows the toes to spread naturally. Minimal cushioning keeps the foot closer to the ground. Flexible soles encourage the foot to bend and move as it would without restriction.
These features are not about stripping everything away, but about allowing the foot to do more of its own work. Over time, this can support strength, balance, and a more natural gait pattern.
For many, the appeal lies in reconnecting with how the foot is designed to function, rather than relying on structured support to guide movement. You can read more about barefoot shoes in our blog: Where to Start
Where Merrell Fits In
Merrell approaches barefoot design with a practical mindset. Their background in outdoor footwear shows in the grip, durability and finish of their shoes. The result is footwear that feels familiar in quality, but different in how it performs underfoot.
This makes Merrell a useful entry point. The designs are understated, the build is reliable, and the transition into a more minimal style feels manageable.
Vapor Glove 7
Vapor Glove 7 is one of the most stripped back of Merrell's line-up. Built with a thin, highly flexible sole and minimal structure, it keeps the foot close to the ground and allows for a full, natural range of motion.
The fit is snug but unrestrictive, with a breathable upper that is best for light activity and day-to-day wear. Vapor Glove 7 is Merrell's barefoot in its purest form, with it comes a clear sense of ground feel and responsiveness.
Trail Glove 8
Trail Glove 8 takes the same core barefoot principles and applies them to more varied terrain. It remains flexible underfoot, but introduces a more robust outsole with added grip, making it better suited to trails and uneven surfaces.
There is a little more substance through the upper and sole compared to the Vapor Glove; in this way, Trail Glove 8 gives reassurance when conditions are less predictable, while still allowing the foot to move naturally.
Hydro Quest Sandals for Kids
Built to handle all-day play, Merrell’s Hydro Quest sandals are a great playmate for long summer days spent outdoors. Inspired by Trail Glove, they carry over the same barefoot sole with a more open design. These shoes are quick-drying neoprene and vegan-friendly, so they just love long sunny days and splashing in and out of water.
The zero-drop, flexible sole gives reliable grip across a mix of surfaces, taking kids from rockpools to rivers, and parks to pavements easily. The neoprene construction and security of twin straps, keeps them comfortable for longer walks and spontaneous adventures alike. Hydro Quest is a versatile choice, adapting easily to whatever the day brings.
The Merrell Fit
Merrell's fit sits in a useful middle ground, with natural movement and flexibility but with a slightly more secure, athletic feel than some of the wider, more open barefoot designs.
While they do offer a foot-shaped toe box and zero-drop sole, the overall fit is typically closer through the midfoot and forefoot, particularly in models like the Vapor Glove and Trail Glove.
For width, this means they generally suit narrow to average feet best. The toe box allows for some natural toe spread, but it isn’t the widest available, so those with broader feet may find the fit more restrictive than expected from a barefoot shoe.
New to Barefoot?
Moving into barefoot footwear can take time. Many people start by wearing these styles for shorter periods, allowing the feet to adjust gradually. Muscles that are less active in more structured shoes may take time to build strength again.
